My mom rocks! She sent me a box of greenery cuttings from the family farm, in Virginia. Not only that, she included a container, floral foam, and all the supplies I needed to create an arrangement. A big bow, too. How cool is that? Click any image for a larger view I gleefully unpacked Magnolia [...]

This huge undulating piece was very interesting. It’s wall sized, with a lot of folds and wrinkles. Click any image for a larger view. It’s made out of…well, I’m not sure. Bottle tops? Something like that. I’m sorry that I didn’t record the artist. Chuck Close’s portrait, Lucas was also huge – and very compelling. [...]

If you ever get a chance to visit this museum, you simply MUST! Even if you’re not a big art fan. It includes huge Egyptian buildings, vignettes of American furniture, sculptures, impressionist art by “the biggies,” unusual contemporary art, suits of armor, and much more. No wonder it’s the most visited attraction in the city! [...]

As part of the Collaborations exhibit, viewers voted on their favorite fiber art piece, favorite non-fiber art piece, and favorite vignette. These were really hard decisions, because so many things were wonderful! The photo below shows my favorite vignette before the addition of a very cool fabric tree. This group included painter Kaye Shannon, and [...]

After arranging plants and such, our vignette looked like this: Click any image for a MUCH better/larger view. That’s Renee Decator seated near her painting, and me standing near my quilt. The quilt at left was made by Lynn Greenberg, not shown. Here’s a better view of Renee’s painting, Taking a Bath with You: I [...]

When applying the first layer of paint, my idea was to mostly obscure the underlying collage. In addition I wanted to create colors of nature for the front and back covers: a blue sky, tree line, and golden grasses in the foreground. All of this would come to fruition with the second paint layer, so [...]

“Paper paintings” artist, Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson, and I have recently swapped commissioned work with one another. This is my Cupcake piece from Elizabeth. Click any image for a larger view. Oh, I’m a lucky girl, because I LOVE this little collage! (It’s 12″ x 12″.) Elizabeth’s work is created exclusively with collage. She uses [...]

I’m a big believer in the value of artistic experimentation. So, when I recently discovered a great book on mixed media, I decided to give it a try. This is the book, Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed Media Artists, by Ann Baldwin. Ann is primarily an abstract painter. Thus, her mixed media pieces include a [...]

In an earlier post, I showed you how I collaged a little box. For the second box, I wanted to try something completely different. I decided to paint it in a process similar to the one used by Renee Decator. The basic idea is to texture the surface with molding paste, randomly apply opaque paint, and then apply transparent [...]

Previously, I talked about Renee Decator’s process for painting with acrylic paints. Gee, that sounded like fun! So, I pulled out my paints, and gave it a shot. What a blast! I mimicked Renee’s process: 1 – Add texture to the canvas. (I used Golden molding paste.) 2 – Randomly apply opaque colors. 3 – Randomly [...]
