Drawing Class

For the last eight weeks I’ve been participating in a drawing class.  Although it’s been challenging (which is the point really,) I’ve definitely gained some skill.

In future blogs, I’ll show you examples of some of the various techniques.  For now, I’ll show you something better:  everyone’s work from last week’s class.  Click the image to see a larger view.

The task for this exercise was to show the reflective qualities of the still life before us.  Most drew on black paper with white chalk.  (I was too cheap to buy the black paper, but after seeing these great results, I bought two pieces to use this week, in our last class.  Mine is in the lower right.)

At the risk of sounding too proud, I’m pretty impressed with all of us.  We’ve all improved dramatically since the first week.

Ellen, Isn’t drawing wonderful??? I’m glad you are in a drawing class; I find this instruction so helpful and the “learning to see instead of just look” is invaluable in our fiber art. I love the drawings–chalk pastels? Right now I’m using pencils and my assignnment for this week is to use a marker to draw MY FACE on a hand-held mirror and then transfer it to paper to work further on it. Hmmmmmm. I’ve played with pastels on dark 600-grit sandpaper in the past with very interesting results. Seeing your class’ work makes me want to do this again.
Keep up the good work and inspiring posts!

    Hey Martha,
This class was actually called “See Like an Artist”, which as you said, is the primary goal. I think I’m too impatient to enjoy drawing very often, but I hope that my improved skills of “seeing” will serve me well.

  4. […] For our last two weeks in class, we focused on value and drew on black paper.  (I was too cheap to purchase the black paper for the first session.  However, after seeing everyone else’s results, I bought it for the final class.  See the July 28 post.) […]
