I recently made this fabric postcard as a “thank you” gift for the outgoing leader of one of my art quilt groups. I think they’re really appropriate for that sort of thing, and YES, you can mail them. (Although I make an envelope, too.)

Hi Ellen: I read this with interest. I also make postcards (for family and friends’ birthdays). I use Timtex or Peltex as the batting. This keeps the card stiff enough to mail without and envelope. (However, I do now use envelopes as for some reason, the Post Office is more prompt with delivering standard mail over unique packaging. Happy stitching!
Great info, Faith. I like the interfacing idea and have used that, too. I haven’t been brave enough to mail one without an envelope, though!
