Uncommon Threads in Stuart, FL
If you’re near Stuart, FL I think you’ll really enjoy the Uncommon Threads exhibit at the Court House Cultural Center. It includes a wide variety of fiber art: wearable, works with fabric, works with paper, and a wide variety of mixed media.
This piece, by Meryl Ruth was my favorite.

I just love the body language, especially the way the young girl has tilted her head. She seems to be studying me as I’m studying her.
The faces were made with different pieces of fabric.

Meryl did an excellent job with the clothing. The design followed the folds of the clothing properly. Plus, sheer layers and stitching added even more interest.

Valerie Goodwin had a very delicate piece made from layers of plastic (?) and fabric. The transparency made it look fragile, but beautiful.

See what I mean? And can you see the big hand stitches holding everything together?

This mixed media piece by Chris Carson was striking.

It was mostly rusted fabric, but with many other items included.

The pieces by Cajah Reed blew my mind. What you’re seeing is fishing line manipulated with bobbin lace techniques and mounted into clear plastic. It’s visible only because it’s well lit and we can see the shadows. Without it, we wouldn’t even notice it. Very creative, right?

Here’s a detail shot. Even the drilled holes become part of the design because they cast shadows!

There was also some amazing wearable art. Check out these jackets by Kathy Knapp.

Gorgeous, right? These are just a few of my favorites. It’s a really excellent exhibit and it will be on display through November 1st. It’s open M-F, 9-5, plus there’s a closing reception Saturday, November 1st, 2–4PM.
