Online Class Starts April 2nd
Image - red flower against black backgroundHave you ever read a great technique book, but later realized you hadn't retained a lot of what you'd read? That's because reading alone is not a very effective teacher. Instead, we need to apply the information, so we'll really "own" it.

Which is a great reason to take a class. In my Adventures in Color online class, stduents create their own color workbooks. Although the workbook itself becomes a useful reference, the largest benefit comes from the process of creating it. This allows the students to use what they've learned, thus owning the concepts and gaining new skills!

Workbook pages are created with paper rather than fabric. This makes it quick and easy to cut and paste. You can see a sample workbook page here.

Exciting Exhibit: Transformations
Image - Floral word Transformations

I'm really excited to be part of the Transformations exhibit, which will soon be on display in the Brevard Art Museum, in Melbourne, Florida. For this exhibit, 12 visual artists have been paired with 12 poets, forming a loose collaboration. (As the only fiber artist, I'm espeically happy to be included.)

I was paired with poet Marica Denius, and we decided to use the word Transition as our springboard. She did a wonderful job writing about clouds and weaving in all sorts of quilting terms.

As my contribution, I created the quilt Natural Progression, shown above. Because of reading Marcia's very honest poetry, I decided to include flowers that didn't meet the traditional definition of beauty. That is, ones that were past their prime, or even seed heads that were missing all their petals. I think this enhanced the quilt and I'm thankful for such a collaboration.

Transformations opens on April 17th with a reception which will include each of the artists discussing (and/or reading) their work.

New Work: Sneak Peek

Although I'd love to show you my most recent quilt, it's under wraps until its September unveiling. Part of a small-group challenge called Tall and Skinny, this little piece is less than nine inches wide!

A detail shot is shown at left. (I even included hand stitching. Very rare for me.)

Tip: Quilt Storage

How do you store your quilts? It can be challenging, can't it?

I store my smaller ones on top of a dresser, in a closet. But the larger ones are stored up and away. Read this article to see what I mean.

More Quilting Fun

In the past month, I've done lots of fun quilting related things. I gave a "Sticky Fingers" demonstration at a local quilt show, made a bunch of note cards, completely reworked an earlier quilt, and swapped art with a paper collage artist.. These adventures and others are described on my blog. (Instructions for the note cards, too!)

I hope you're enjoying your own unique quilt making adventure!
