What a Retreat!

ByEllen Lindner February 20, 2018February 19, 2018

Wow! Last weekend I had the great pleasure of attending a retreat for the Florida members of SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates.) It was FABULOUS in every possible way!

There were 26 of us in a lovely rustic setting. Soon, dyed and painted fabrics were hanging everywhere. When we ran out of clothes line the vegetation worked just fine.

You could work on your own projects.

Or learn from someone else.

Or attend one of the many informative demos.

Plus, there was delicious food, great camaraderie, and restful evenings.

I came home energized and ready to work on several things. But, I’m already looking forward to next year’s retreat.

P.S. I’ll be writing several more posts about this great event.

MUCH Smaller

I belong to a wonderful organization called SAQA, Studio Art Quilt Associates. The primary purpose of the group is to promote quilts as art and to support art quilters. As part of the first goal, SAQA puts together a trunk show every few years. Members are asked to make art quilts that are only 10″…

AQS Prize Winners
ByEllen Lindner February 29, 2016February 27, 2016

The prize winners at the Daytona Beach AQS quilt show were quite wonderful. These are some of my favorites. Claudia Pfeil’s Fern Rising won Best of Show and it was very well deserved. The shadows added to the fern shapes made it look extremely 3D. Plus, the use of sheer fabrics (for the spirals) and an…

Dying with Pat Pauly
ByEllen Lindner May 3, 2019June 2, 2019

My dyeing/print making class with Pat Pauly was amazing. She’s SO comfortable with thickened dyes and what she can do with them that it was almost hard to keep up. This was the first demo, about using stencils. She doesn’t use them with a screen, but just hangs on to a corner and scrapes dye…

Me? Working with Solids?
ByEllen Lindner October 20, 2026October 19, 2026

Shockingly, I’ve decided to make my next quilt from solid fabrics. Something I NEVER thought I’d do! And what’s equally unusual is that I’ll be making this quilt about frozen (dead) plants. What? We had a bad freeze here in Florida, back in February, and it killed some of the tropical plants in our yard….

Opening Night: 100% Pure Florida
ByEllen Lindner September 10, 2017September 9, 2017

Oh my goodness: opening night at the 100% Pure Florida exhibit was mobbed! It was very difficult to move around, but this was one of those “good problems to have.” My piece “Lava to the Sea” was over in the corner. Not ideal, but that’s okay. It won an award of merit even so! Yippee!…

What Next?

After successfully cutting up a UFO (unfinished object) and using it as the starting point for some little collages, I was anxious to do it again. The question was “Which UFO do I use?” Because, well, I have more than one. Maybe I could do something with this partially constructed prickly pear. Or with this…
