A Nice Award

It’s always nice to win an award and my quilt, Vine Ripened, has recently done so.

It won 3rd place in a show called “National Juried Fiber Arts.” The exhibit was held at the Bower Center for the Arts, in Bedford, VA.

My piece won 3rd place. You can see my ribbon and award certificate below.

This exhibit runs through August 17th, so you’ve still got a little time to see it.

I really like entering my quilts into exhibits which include objects other than quilts. I also like to send them to places where I’d like to teach, in hopes of attracting a little attention. (My folks live in VA, so I’d like to add it to my teaching resume.)

Award of Merit in Mixed Media Show

I was delighted to receive an award of merit at a local mixed media show. My piece,Vine Ripened, won this recognition at 100% Pure Florida, a show for Florida residents.

It’s always nice to win an award, but I’m especially thankful when it’s in a mixed media exhibit. These shows draw  viewers who may not be familiar with quilts as art, so it’s great to educate them.

You can see my piece and the rest of the exhibit at Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, in Melbourne, FL. Hurry, though, because the exhibit ends February 23rd.

And, if you go, cross the street and check out the wonderful exhibit at the museum.

You Like Me! You Really Like Me!

Imagine my surprise when a friend told me that she had voted for me “in the quilt blog contest.” What?  I had never heard of such a thing.  But, lo and behold, she showed me this.

Apparently my blog is a finalist in the “Best Art Quilt Blog” category.  Well, that’s certainly nice!  (Even though I wasn’t notified and my name is misspelled.) Still, my blog was nominated and enough people liked it to make it a finalist.  Great!

You can find full details here. (And, of course, if you want to vote for me while you’re there, I won’t complain.)  I wonder if there’s a prize.

“It’s an honor to be nominated.” Truly! (Even though I’m kinda chuckling over this.)

“Coastal Overlook” Takes First Place

Woohoo!  My quit, Coastal Overlook, took first place in a local art show!  I’m delighted.

Coastal Overlook

It’s always nice to win an award but it’s even better when it includes exposing art enthusiasts to quilts as art.  Yes!

The show is the Titusville Art League’s Spring Show and I won in the mixed media category.  The show is free and it continues until 3 PM on Sunday, the 24th.  It’s at the Police Hall of Fame in Titusville, FL.

This piece is available for purchase.

AQS Prize Winners

The prize winners at the Daytona Beach AQS quilt show were quite wonderful.  These are some of my favorites.

Claudia Pfeil’s Fern Rising won Best of Show and it was very well deserved.

The shadows added to the fern shapes made it look extremely 3D.  Plus, the use of sheer fabrics (for the spirals) and an abundance of crystals made this quilt literally sparkle.

A Passion for Purple, by Andrea Brokenshire had everyone stopping in their tracks.

It won the award for best workmanship on a home machine.  Appropriate, don’t you think?

Although I’m a machine quilter (or maybe because I’m a machine quilter,) I’m always impressed by dense hand quilting.  And this quilt, by Donna Douglas had it in spades.

It’s called Flourishing on the Vine and it won the award for Best Hand Workmanship.  I can’t begin to imagine how much time went into making this quilt.  It was stunning.

The next quilt, by Lois Podolny was a little awkward to photograph, but I think you can get the idea.

As you can see, she’s carefully cut and pieced symmetrical fabrics to piece these wonderful radiating kaleidoscope designs.

It’s called Magical Moments in Time.

A beautiful and interesting selection of prize winning quilts!
