Bedroom Redo

I recently redecorated my bedroom and I’m LOVING the results!

Here’s the bed wall, with my quilt Rhythm of the City prominently displayed.

More of my work moving across the window wall. This is Croton Leaves 3.

Continuing to look left, a corner featuring my paper collage Three Cherries.

And, to complete the artwork roundup, at the foot of the bed I have Brainstorm.

My tilt mirror was originally painted gold but I switched it up to “dark steel.” Although my technique was lacking it still looks good at first glance.

I wanted a taupe bed skirt, but I couldn’t find one to fit my tall bed. White was the only color available in that length. So, my friend suggested combining the two and I think it works.

It was fun to use a variety of surfaces and textures. Shiny and dull, smooth and rough, modern and vintage. I love the tufted look of the bedspread.

And these fuzzy white pom-pom flowers are the perfect contrast to my grandmother’s vintage water pitcher.

It sure was fun to put this all together and I’m SO delighted with the vibrant colors throughout!

P.S. How do you like the way I’ve presented Croton Leaves 3, above? (2nd photo.) I bought a frame with glass and a white mat and I mounted the little quilt right on to the FRONT of the glass. I love presenting small pieces this way. They need something to give them more substance, but I don’t want to cover the texture of the piece. Lots of double-sided tape does the trick.

Thanks, Mary! I’m very happy with it.

      Thanks, Betty!

Your bedroom is beautiful. I like the display of the quilt in the frame. I would worry about the double sided tape though, whether it would leave sticky residue on the quilt. I have seen quilts on a frame with a mat, but no glass so that the texture can be seen more clearly.

    • Ellen Lindner November 25, 2019 at 8:32 pm #

      Thanks, Shasta.

The double-sided tape is a reluctant to stick to fabric, which is why I use several strips of it. I think it would come off quite easily. (But, since it’s on the back, I’m not too worried either way.)

Love the painted wall! Perfect for your art. And the frame + tape is a great idea for temporary display of smaller pieces.

    • Ellen Lindner November 26, 2019 at 8:01 pm #

As you might guess, Sunnie, the wall color was selected specifically to go with the largest quilt. Then, because these are my favorite colors, I selected from my STASH of similarly colored pieces for around the room. 🙂

Could you provide a closer look at the Croton Leaves 3? It’s hard to tell what the mount actually looks like. Your bedroom looks great!

    • Ellen Lindner November 25, 2019 at 8:33 pm #

Thanks, Lif. I’ll take a better picture and post it.

Beautiful bedroom!! Perfect for the display of your art. I love all of the textures too, but most of all I love the clean uncluttered look of the room, like a gallery for the art. I think that was perfect to use the 2 bedskirts together too.

    • Ellen Lindner November 26, 2019 at 8:03 pm #

“Like a gallery for the art.” That’s a high compliment, Wanda, and largely what I was going for. I selected the teal color to go with the largest quilt and then found smaller ones (in my stash) to use throughout the room. I, too, like an uncluttered look, (although you couldn’t tell it from my studio!)

I think you could have another career as a decorator. It is a beautiful room. I love your colors, your artwork is framed beautifully, and perfectly placed.

      Thanks, Madeline!

Beautiful job you have done. Love the colors you chose. And I really like the idea of how you framed that small quilt.

    • Ellen Lindner November 25, 2019 at 8:34 pm #

Thanks Doreen. These are my favorite colors, so I had lots of artwork from which to choose. 🙂

My mom pointed out that the texture of the pom-pom flowers repeats the texture of the little thread tufts on the bedspread. Isn’t that cool? Because I did not plan it! (She’s the real artist in the family.)

One teal wall sets everything off beautifully. Love seeing these works again, in a personal environment. One suggestion for the next framing project—I’d forego glass altogether, and just mount Croton’s successor on a matte board—maybe a textured watercolor paper, with foamcore board cut smaller all around than your art quilt in between, so piece “floats.” This works best with a shadowbox (dimensional) frame.

      Hi Eleanor,

Glad you like the personal room!

Yes, I’ve seen pieces mounted as you described and it’s a very nice presentation. Especially the depth created when the foam core inserts are used.

    Dear Ellen,
Words cannot tell you how impressed I was seeing your bedroom. Over the years I’ve had many different paint, wallpaper, etc., and I think it will be right! No! Its either too light or….too dark! I think that you have choosen
light grey on one (??) of your walls and its perfect. Would you share the names of your paint with me??
If I am being out-of-line….Please forgive me and know that I will understand. Whatever you decide I still
    think your choices are fantastic!!!!!

    • Ellen Lindner December 14, 2019 at 11:57 pm #

Thanks for the compliment, Vivian. I’ll be glad to share the color names with you. First, I’ll have to dig them up and then I’ll send you a private email.

Hi Ellen, Love your up scaled bedroom. Your artwork just pops. I am partial to your crotons and the mounting on the front of the frame nails it.
    Awesome,

    • Ellen Lindner December 14, 2019 at 11:58 pm #

Thanks, Theresa! I’m glad you like the mounting idea. It’s one of my favorites.
