Instant Art Quilt

Supply List

©2007 Ellen Lindner

½ yard of drop dead gorgeous hand dyed fabric.  It must have significant light and dark areas, with 2 or more colors.  (It works best if the print/scale of the fabric is large, rather than having small patches of light and dark throughout.  Also, at least ¼ of the fabric should be light.)

Threads to match

Muslin 28 x 19

Fusible web (like Wonder Under,) 1 piece cut 28 x 19, 1 piece cut 20 x 1.5

Scraps for possible fabric accents  (See note*)

Thin cotton batting, ~30 x 21.  (I like Quilters’ Dream Cotton, Select.)

Sewing machine with a walking foot

Basic sewing supplies, including long thin straight pins.  (I like IBC 1¾” pins.)

Backing fabric, about 27 x 18

Fusible web, 25 x 1.5

*About those scraps:  Many Instant Art Quilts benefit from the added spark of small accents.  After the main part of your top is complete, you’ll audition your potential accent fabrics, so bring small amounts (SCRAPS!) of several fabrics.  Good candidates include fabrics that are either lighter versions of the lightest color, or darker versions of the darkest.  Colors that are complimentary (opposite) the main color may also work well.  Remember that the accent fabrics should enhance the overall look, rather than completely take over.

Class prep:

  • Iron largest piece of fusible web to muslin, following manufacturer’s directions, then remove the paper backing.
  • Set up your machine for quilting, using the walking foot.

Note:  Students should be very comfortable with attaching and using a walking foot.
