Third Tomato

Are you getting tired of seeing my tomatoes?  Don’t worry: this is the last one.

This tomato, on the right, is only a partial one.

Still, I’ll need to build a little extra to allow for positioning and trimming.  This time I started with the lightest spots.

A detail of that, with many little pieces of fabric helping the transition from very light to medium-light.

This tomato has “cheeks” so a line of sharp value change will indicate this.

And here are all three tomatoes, arranged approximately as they will be in the final composition.  I’m quite thrilled with them!

Next, I’ll need to decide on background colors.  Something neutral, I think.  Any suggestions?

    Beautiful tomatoes. Gray?

What about something that suggests either a farm stand table (rough texture gray) or a nice bowl (soft green)?

Although I can also see them on an old checked tablecloth -but that certainly isn’t neutral!

I like the rough farm table idea, (although I’m not sure I want to put that much effort into it.) We’ll see.

You did a beautiful job, Ellen! I think a light gray/beige background ~ we call it “greige”.

I’ve known Susan Carlson for over twenty years, since before she started using this method of making her fiber art. She is so a lovely person & so talented.
For a significant birthday of mine, my family all chipped in together & commissioned her to do a fabric portrait of me. When I opened the gift,it was one of the few times in my life that I was totally speechless.

Oh my goodness, Judith, what a FABULOUS gift!!! I’d love to see it!

And, yes, gray has now won as the background color and I’ve got it going on the design wall.

YOu have every reason to be thrilled. They are fabulous!!! The first thought that occurred to me was a muted plaid or check – something that says “tablecloth”. Maybe blue and white. But really, they are so gorgeous you could put them on anything and they will dazzle the beholder. Wondering: will you quilt the background first and then apply them or apply them and then quilt around them? Bravo!

      Hi Degen,

I’m glad you like them. Thanks!

Hmm, a checkerboard. I think it would have to be pretty muted, so as not to compete with the tomatoes. Something to ponder.

I’ll attach the tomatoes before starting to quilt. I’m getting close!

    Light blue or light yellow.

Hmm, Kristin. An interesting idea. I’ll have to audition that.

      Thanks for the suggestion!

I was going to suggest the textured look like Michele suggested. I’m so inspired after looking at these!

    Purple

    • Ellen Lindner May 12, 2016 at 10:37 pm #

Gwen, I hadn’t considered purple. I’ll have to give it an audition.

      Thanks for the suggestion!
