“Let the Sun Shine In” Exhibit

I recently enjoyed a visit to Harrisonburg, VA, to see the “Let the Sun Shine In” exhibit. The artists in this exhibit are all members of Studio Art Quilt Associates, and I am one of them. Here I am with my piece, Florida Native #2. It was made with commercial fabrics and one that I created  with breakdown printing. The vein shadows were created with black tulle.

That’s Mary Ritter’s Tea Time hanging behind my shoulder.

Paula used a wonderful array of techniques to create texture. This was very compelling and it drew you in for closer scrutiny.

Composing with an Eye Toward Value

These were the fabrics I selected as I started on an abstract quilt with NO plan.

Although I didn’t have a plan, I did have a goal. I wanted to use the last of my favorite fabric, the navy and yellow grid, and to let it be the star of the show.

BTW, can you see how the scale of that one print greatly affects the scale of the overall piece? I wouldn’t want to cut it into tiny pieces, for instance.

I had two lengths of the favorite fabric and I wanted to cut it as little as possible. I cut one piece into about a 1/3 – 2/3 split, so I had 3 pieces.. Since this fabric has the highest value contrast (light vs. dark) of all the other fabrics, I knew it would attract a lot of attention. Which was good.

Therefore, I moved everything else out of the way and created the first part of the composition with just these 3 pieces of fabric.

Because this fabric had a diagonal aspect to its design, it created a lot of energy. Plus, as you can see, I made sure to offset the pieces. I really liked this starting point! I knew I’d have to pay attention to the value contrasts that developed throughout the rest of the design, making sure that none of them drew attention away from it.

In the photo above you can probably tell that the left fabric is folded under at the bottom. I cut that off and added it to my starting composition, (see below.) I wanted to break up the large expanse of grid on the left piece and inserted a skinny orange strip (shown in the next photo.) I liked it a lot.

I let the fabric lead my next few decisions: adding more yellow and orange in their respective areas.

As you can see in the photo above, I didn’t have large pieces of orange, so I knew I’d have to piece those together. I thought I’d probably repeat the orange in the lower right, as well. Adding navy would be tricky. It would automatically create a very high value contrast, attracting attention. I’d have to consider it very carefully.

And what about that white in the top center of the photo above? Although I liked the fabric in the mix, it was right next to the navy grid, creating exactly the problem I was hoping to avoid. I did add some navy just right of center and I thought it worked there.

This hodge podge of scraps pinned to the design wall evolved only slightly as I began to figure out how to piece all of this. See the finished quilt in my next post.

Do you think about value this much? I find it very helpful, although sometimes I get seduced by a color or some such and forget to pay attention to the contrast.

Working with Dwindling Fabrics

I was running low on a favorite hand dyed fabric when I decided to make a quilt with it. It’s the navy and yellow grid shown below, indicated by the largest arrow.

I pulled every other hand dyed fabric that would go with it and this is the selection, shown above. Smaller arrows indicated two more fabrics that were down to fairly small pieces. I was loving the energy of these bright fabrics and excited to get started.

I pinned everything up on the design wall and began to edit. Now you get a better idea about the sizes of the pieces. Some of the fabrics had too much pattern and would draw attention away from my feature fabric.

After deleting the “show stoppers” I thought this combination would be workable.

I’d still need to edit and carefully consider as I proceeded. What about that near-solid navy? Will it be too strong? And the brighter blue grid on the left: too bright?

This was my starting point. These fabrics went on my work table, and all the others were moved out of sight. I didn’t have a design plan. My only plan was to feature that navy/yellow gridded fabric. All my decisions would be in support of it. I knew this would be challenging, but also invigorating.

In my next post, I’ll show you how I began to compose the design. It was fun!

Turning Leftovers Into a Meal

After making Potager Garden, I had quite a few scraps left over, so I decided to use them to make a small quilt. This is what I had to work with.

I began to move them around to see how they might fit together. I didn’t like this first version, though. I thought it needed more yellow, if I could find some in my stash.

Plus, the colors in the first version (above) were pretty evenly scattered about. That works for wallpaper, but not always for art. I remembered what I had recently learned about massing a color and switched things to this.

Much better! And I didn’t change it much after that.

Story Telling Through Textile Art

At the current “Stitched, Stamped, & Sculpted” exhibit, in Ormond Beach, FL, many of the pieces tell stories.

Some of my favorites were made by Teddy Pruett, who works exclusively with vintage clothing and linens. Just look at this piece, called Whatever Happened to Baby?

Each block features vintage baby clothing. Teddy has added a little story telling with text, and each of the panels are held together with diaper pins.

It’s called I Have a Birb on Myself. (Yes, that’s the correct spelling.) The writing is childlike. Can you see the “birb?”

There was so much to see in these detailed pieces! I know I didn’t look long enough.

Other artists also showed off their narrative chops. The museum hung these works together which increased their impact. These were made by Maggie Dillon, who loves to use vintage photos as her reference material.

It was fascinating to see these works up close and to read the artists’ statements. I  hope you’ll visit these artists’ websites and see more of their creations.

Slicing and Dicing: Now Where Was I?

After starting a new quilt at a retreat, it was time to continue at home. Now, where was I? Something like this.

I studied the arrangement and knew I wanted to change a few things. (Remember the abundance of that favorite fabric bottom left?) While that was percolating in my brain, I looked for areas that needed a little more energy. I altered a few with skinny lines.

Notice the black “horizontal” line on the left of this unit. Can you see it’s been altered to be jagged? All I did was add 2 tucks in the back. That added some character, but also made the unit 1″ skinnier.

What should go where? There never seems to be a RIGHT answer. Just interesting ones. Like this top right corner. If I were to use this piece, which way should it go?

Sometimes there’s a structural reason to do things, for instance if too many seams are coming together in one spot. But, generally, I go with whatever fits best or appeals to me most at the moment. I do study things a lot as I go! (See what I did with this piece in the last photo, top right corner.)

Remember how, at the retreat, I gathered all the brightest fabrics near the center? I liked that, but realized I’d never really considered any other alternatives. Before I got too far along I decided to audition the pieces with blue in the center.

Interesting. But not better. I stuck with what I had.

I continued altering, adding, slicing when needed, and getting things to fit. Here it is nearly complete, with four big units ready to be sewn together. I was quite happy with it.

BTW (by the way,) I generally think about names as I’m working on a piece. This one reminds me of light through spring leaves. Hmm, Canopy? Spring? Dappled Light? Your thoughts?

“And the Band Plays On”

Here’s my latest little art quilt, And the Band Plays On.

I made it as donation for a SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates,) fundraiser which required a size of
12″ x 12″.

Fortunately, I had some leftover units from this quilt, which I used as a starting point.

“Party Chatter” Complete

I’ve been having fun working on my “sour dough” quilt.

First, I decided on the placement of the leftover blocks. I cut a few of them into smaller units.

I’m a believer in this quote from Sally Sellers, “It only takes a little ugly; just enough to make the other colors sing.” So, should I add a little ugly? I decided a small amount of yellow would do the trick.

Finally, I added the skinny dark teal strips. Because they’re so high contrast, they add a lot of drama, and really make the composition.

In the photo above, I started quilting it. I had lots of good suggestions about a title. But, to me, it seemed to represent some sort of social interaction. A lively, happy one. So, the name “Party Chatter” seemed to fit. Here’s the finished piece.

I wanted a lot of energy in the piece, and I think I achieved it.

The detail shot shows how I added double black stitching for emphasis. I use this technique quite a bit and I think it’s effective. I always do it in a rather loose sketchy sort of way.

African Wax Prints

What do Michelle Obama’s purses, large chickens, and drought all have in common?  They’ve all inspired African batik fabrics. Originally designed in the Dutch East Indies, these fabrics are now designed and printed commercially in Holland and sold – to a very enthusiastic market – along the coast of Africa.

You can learn all about it at the current exhibit, “Wandering Spirit,” on display at the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts, in Melbourne, FL.

The fabrics, along with garments made from them, are displayed beautifully. Most of the patterns are large, with strong contrasts, and vivid colors.

I attended a gallery walk lead by Dr. Gifty Benson, who is an expert from Ghana. She explained that the fabric patterns each have distinctive names: horse hair, bad year (after a drought,) Happy Family (of chickens,) and such.  Even more interesting, special patterns are created to celebrate or commemorate notable events and people.  For instance, in 2008 several patterns were designed to honor Barack  and Michelle Obama: 6 patterns for him and 2 for her.

There was another one called “Michelle Obama’s shoes,” which was printed with high heels.

These fabrics are sold in 6 yard lengths.  Buyers then cut them into 2 yard lengths and use two of the resulting pieces for a skirt, and a top.  The third piece is often simply hemmed to be used as a shawl or a head wrap.  (Or maybe some fancy sleeves.) You can see some examples of how the three pieces were used in the garments below.

Dr. Benson said that the release of new patterns is eagerly anticipated, because the women “just love them!” I’ll be they do have some fun planning how to make these garments.

I’m still thinking about the choice to honor Michelle Obama with prints about her shoes and her purses.  It made me wonder what sort of prints would honor/depict me? How do you depict an outgoing chatterbox?  Some big lips, maybe?  A jumble of alphabet letters?  It’s kinda fun to think about.
