Improv Quilt Nearly Complete

I’ve been having so much fun working on this improvisational quilt. (See the previous two posts for more in-progress photos and explanations.)

After LOTS of piecing, slicing, and repiecing, I finally thought the quilt sections had enough energy and excitement to start thinking about how to put them together. First, I looked for sections with similar dimensions and cut them so they could be pieced into rows. This involved making another few blocks to fill gaps. And finally, I had the sections arranged and ready to be pieced together.

For quilting, I thought I could play up the curving lines. I drew some reference arcs and here’s the quilting in-progress.

Lily Improv

Are you familiar with Linda and Laura Kemshall? They’re a mother-daughter duo who make fabulous art – in fabric and paper, and who have a weekly newsletter. Recently, they featured this photo. Isn’t it lovely?

I was enamored with the colors of the lilies and wrote to ask if I could use it for a quilt’s inspiration. Linda had taken the photo and she gave me permission to use it.

I pulled out pretty much all of my pink and green fabrics and began to make selections. I knew I’d also want to add in some grey, too.

Have you ever made an improv quilt? The critical thing is to get the colors and their proportions the way you want them at the start. Then, you can sew and slash and piece to your heart’s content. (It turns out that I missed the mark, but more on that later.)

To start, I cut a bunch of fabric rectangles. For the critical pinks I cut them about the size of a piece of typing paper. The whites, greys, and greens were only about 1/4 that size. I also sorted through my scraps and pulled out the pieces that would work. Then, everything got stacked into contrasting pairs and taken to the sewing machine.

The scraps had wonky shapes, but I just trimmed them to straight lines.

Now that I think of it, I guess that’s the crux of this improv method: sew things together and then trim them.

This is what my blocks looked like, above, after that first round of piecing. Everything is large and chunky. But, I knew I’d be GREATLY modifying them so I was pretty happy with them. (Maybe too much peach, though.) Then, the fun began.

Sometimes I sliced across seams and rejoined them with mismatched alignment.

And I began to add grey to some of the oddly shaped blocks.

Is It Hot in Here or is It Just Me?

As a warm-natured Floridian, I’m often asking “Is it hot in here, or is it just me?”  The hot colors of this quilt made me think of that, so I used my frequent question as the title.

This quilt is larger than most of mine, 54 high x 49 wide.  So large, in fact, I thought it might one day get used for snuggle purposes. With that in mind, I put a binding on it.  (For the first time in about 14 years!)  Of course, I still consider it an art quilt and I added a sleeve for hanging.

Arranging Improv Blocks

After making about 15 improvisationally pieced units/blocks, it was time to figure out hot to best arrange them.  In the past, I just put them all together and was happy with the result.  So, I tried that first.

Sure enough, it was lively and energetic.  But, I wondered if the energy was TOO over the top.  Did it just look frenetic?  (Especially with such dramatic colors.)  Would it look better if there were units of plain fabric interspersed with the pieced blocks?

I auditioned the idea on my computer.

Hmm.  It still had plenty of energy, but it did calm down some.  I decided to go with this plan.

Which meant that my quilt suddenly grew by a factor of about 3!  Heck, it’ll probably be big enough to snuggle under!  When was the last time I made a quilt that size?!? (Answer 2001.)

Back to work adding in plain squares.  So far I’m liking the result.

Starting a New Improv Quilt

While making Deliberation I purchased quite a few rust-colored fabrics.  Several of them were purchased online as part of a collection.  So, along with those rust colors, I received many luscious oranges, reds, and fuchsias.  I really liked them and began to plan how I might use them.

I love hand-dyed quilts with many similar colors of the same hue.  I’m not into dyeing, but I suspected I could buy something similar.  And I was right.   Soon, I had a collection of solid and near-solid fabrics in a tight color combination of orange to fuchsia.  Knowing that I’d need some different values and accent colors, I also purchased some neutral browns, as well as yellow-greens and purples with a hand stamped look.

As you can see, I auditioned them in the proportions in which I intended to use them.  (Very important.)  The major colors are shown in large quantities and the accent ones in small shapes.  I liked the combination so I proceeded with cutting rectangles: largish ones from major colors and small ones from accents.  My plan was to use improvisational piecing, which simply means that no patterns are used.  (See the P.S. note)

Next, I pieced together couples made up of one large and one small piece.  I put them back on the design wall and checked proportions again.  I made some adjustments by sewing a few new blocks, adding some dark neutrals, and trimming down some of the existing ones.  Once I had the proportions to my liking I felt like I could forge ahead without a lot more planning.  Notice that all the seams were curved and many were diagonal.  In the photo below I was just getting started cutting and rearranging the first round of shapes.

At this point, I was confident in my plan and ready to get started.  With improvisational piecing it’s great fun to slice into things and sew them back together with a shifted orientation.  Or to insert skinny strips of contrasting colors.  My plan was to do plenty of both.  My idea was to make a bunch of  “blocks,” some with lots of tiny pieces and others with just one alteration.  Then, I intended to let the intricate pieces create a  focal point and to use the simpler pieces around the edges.

This is an example of what I did as I combined and altered two “couples,” making them into one block.

This is the final version of the most intricate block.  I won’t square it up any more than necessary.  I’ll leave it like this until I’m ready to join blocks together.  At that point I’ll trim only as needed, but it’s very unlikely that it will end up as a rectangle.

All of this is easy, so it’s quite addicting to slice and alter!

P.S.  There are lots of things online about how to do improvisational piecing, although most of them have to do with straight seams.  I learned from Quilting Arts TV, series 1600 with Pat Pauly.

“Coastal Overlook” Complete

My latest piece, Coastal Overlook, is now complete.  It’s about 30″ x 40″ and I’m pretty happy with it.

  If you’ve been following my blog you know that this quilt was inspired by a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway in California.  I wanted to abstract it and, for me, that’s the tricky part.  I want to hit the sweet spot where the level of abstraction has added interest, but not completely obliterated the image.  I’m never sure if I’ve hit it or not.  Of course, a good title always helps give clues.

To add energy I added lots of off-kilter seams and skinny inserts.  I think it works.

When I took my inspiration photos I was standing near the edge of a cliff, with lots of golden grasses at my feet.  I hinted at these with a little piecing and thread painting.

Coastal Piece Continuing

I’m continuing to enjoy working on my quilt which was inspired by the beautiful scenery of California.

I think I probably sliced and diced that block more than any of the others.  It’s a constant balancing act for me as I make decisions about what to retain (mostly just very general color positions,) and what to abstract.

You may have noticed that many of the blocks have curved edges.  That’s because I’ll probably use curved seams to join them together.  I’m keeping them all a little large and wonky to allow for t hat.

The photo above shows 19 blocks, about half of the number needed.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot to tell you:  I scorched it!  Controlling all the curved seams requires a good bit of pressing and I apparently over did it.  See how the seam allowances look sorta  yellow?  Yep, I burnt them.  I’m not panicking, though.  Worse case:  I’ll make a new block.  Best case:  I’ll use some of my art products and cover it.  (But, I AM pressing more carefully now!)

Coastal Cut Up

Remember the great scenery I saw along the coast of California?  I couldn’t get those strong water colors out of my head and knew I wanted to make a quilt inspired by them.

Amazing, right?  And, yes, the water was actually that color.

I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to represent this idea, but I knew I didn’t want it to be overly exact.  I’d have to do some experimenting. But first, I started by auditioning my fabrics.  (It would need some white and black, don’t you think?)   I had many more fabrics in these colors, so I jumped in.

Remembering the fun I had piecing improvisationally, I wondered if that technique would work here.  I knew I’d need to divvy the project up into units, so I drew divisions on my inspiration photo and got to work.  This was my set up.

I jumped in and made these six blocks.

Hmm.  Yes, the colors were working.  And the white inserts added interest.  But, it didn’t have the excitement of crashing waves and rushing tides.  It would need something.

At about this point I had lunch with a friend and showed her In the Moment.  I excitedly told her about improvisational piecing and she wanted to try it.  She showed me some perfectly lovely abstract blocks later and you know what I wanted to do with them?  Cut them up, insert pieces, and rearrange things!  I told her and she actually liked the idea.  A fun conversation.

I came home and looked at my six blocks and then it hit me:  I needed to take my own advice!  I need to slash, insert, and rearrange!  I tackled this with glee and this photo shows 5 of the 6 altered.

MUCH better, don’t you think?  I was very excited!  Now, it had the energy I wanted!

I continued on, very loosely copying the color placement of the photo.  I had to keep telling myself, “not exact, not exact, not exact.”  After a few more days I had this.

Yes!  Now I was getting somewhere!  Can you see that rocky outcrop that’s beginning to appear?  Loving it!

“In the Moment” Complete

I finally got around to photographing In the Moment.  It’s the first quilt in which I used improvisational piecing, and it was so much fun!

It was very exhilarating to piece curves, slice them, shift them, insert skinny lines, and then piece all the units together.  I’ll definitely be using this technique again!
