Here’s my challenge piece, complete. I call it Fragrant Climb.
Detail:
In a nod to the small flowers near the stairs in the inspiration photo, I drew on additional open-petal ones (above.) I liked the effect and will use it again.
I’m pretty happy with this piece. Especially since I wasn’t that crazy about the inspiration photo. But, then, that’s why it’s called a challenge, right?
I encourage you to view a slide show showing all ten pieces made for this challenge.

Seeing your group challenge is very inspirational because I am working on developing “my” style. They are all lovely!
Thanks, Michele. It’s amazing how different they all are, right?
In years past we’ve had even more deviation. One year, we used a busy scene including a roadside fruit stand. I did my quilt on just mangoes. Someone else did hers focusing just an old tire from the background. Others did abstracts inspired by the colors, and so on.
Very interesting take on the photo. I enjoyed seeing all the pieces made by your Dirty Dozen group! How lucky to have a like-minded bunch to bounce ideas and inspiration off of. Thanks for posting the slide show.
Beautiful work Ellen. I really loved your take on the challenge photo. The more representational works from the Dirty Dozen group were very nice, but I find that I’m more and more drawn to abstract perspectives like yours. Thanks so much for sharing your work!
Thanks, Michelle. I find that I like things to be (generally) recognizable, but with a significant detour away from realistic. It’s much more fun to create (for me) and I think the finished result is more interesting, as well.
So enjoyed this process and the slide show….peeking around on the site i can almost always guess which creations are yours! No, of course the colors don’t give it away. Great work.
“Colors don’t give it away.” Yeah, right. 🙂 Thanks for your feedback, as always, Cindy!
