Great Student Work

I recently taught Double Reverse Applique (via Zoom) for a guild in Concord, MA. As usual, the students had awesome results. Just take a look.

They really did a great job!

Here are some more great student pieces that I’ve been remiss in showing you:

Susan Newsom’s project from Floral Improv
Susan Newsom's Floral Improv project. Made in a class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blogShe did a great job with floppy flowers, contrast stitching, and that crossword background.

In Design Your Own Nature Quilt, John Ming Mark REALLY got creative with his quilt! This was his inspiration photo. To me, it wasn’t very exciting. But, I could see potential for some interesting diagonal shapes and lines.

This is what he did with it, called “Enchanted Forest.” Isn’t it wonderful? I was amazed at the colors and shapes he brought to his piece! I think it’s very successful.

Gabriele started with a favorite photo of lupines on a shoreline.

Then, she interpreted the shapes loosely and made a wonderful composition, which she calls “Lupines.”

See what I mean? Her flowers are even more interesting than those in her photo! And check out the foliage in the foreground. This is a good example of letting the fabric do the work for you. If I remember correctly, she only used two fabrics in this area.

I have SO much fun working with students and we’re always ALL thrilled with their results!

P.S. Many of my classes are available on-demand as self-paced online options.
P.P.S. I’d love to do a zoom or in-person class for your guild. See my selections.

More Apples in Michigan

Here are a few more apples from the Double Reverse Applique class I recently taught for a guild in Oakland county, MI.

Gail’s machine died mid-class. How frustrating! As you can see she got all the way to the very last piece, (the blue background for the bottom.)

Student results from Ellen Lindner's Double Reverse Applique class. AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Gail was excited about the technique, however, and had all her pear fabrics ready to go for after her machine gets repaired.

Penny, Nancy, and Molly worked in the same location, with the same fabrics. I know they had fun and now they have really great matching apples!

Double Reverse Applique: Pears

In a recent Double Reverse Applique class, the students finished their apples in about four hours and had plenty of time to start on their pears. Aren’t they looking great?

Double Reverse Applique: Apples

These ladies, in Oakland county, Michigan, did a great job in a recent “Double Reverse Applique” class. Check out their awesome apples.

As you can see, most students made red apples, which was consistent with the class sample. Very striking, right?

Can you believe that most of these gals finished their apples in just four hours? Then, it was on to pears. Look for those in the next post.

Would your group enjoy this class?  Or, you can easily learn it on your own by downloading the eBook, or enrolling in the online class.

Double Reverse Appliqué at Road at Home

Last month I taught three classes for Road at  Home, a large quilt show type online event. The first was the ever popular Double Reverse Appliqué. We had fun and the students did excellent work!

Students in Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

First I’ll show you Cindy’s apple, because she was my college roommate! How cool is that? She lives in Minnesota and I’m in Florida, so this was rare interaction. She’s very new to art quilting, but she had no trouble at all.

Student results from Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Trudy’s bright colors pop nicely! Student results from Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Susan used more muted colors, which gave a completely different effect. (These photos are via Zoom, so the stripey computer effect isn’t really there on her fabrics.)

Student results from Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Kami made very bright and colorful choices!

Student results from Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Of course, not everyone chose a red apple. Doesn’t Chris’ green one look great? And the purple background color is perfect!

Student results from Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Irene’s green apple was almost complete. (Yes, we do the background last with this technique.)

Keitha’s near-solid fabrics really let the value changes do the work. This is what makes it look 3D.

C.J. won a free seat in class and put it to good use. I love the way her apple stands out against her blue-green background fabrics.

Bonnie worked all day with power from a generator. That was a new one for me. As you can see, it didn’t slow her down at all. Nice, right?

Grace missed a large part of the day but still managed to make a good start on her apple.

Student results from Double Reverse Applique class with Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com/blog

The class also includes a pattern for a pear. After finishing their apples a couple of students made a good start on their pears. Check out Kami’s BRIGHT colors.

And Cindy made good progress on a gold pear. We worked from light to dark, so we started with the highlight spots: not too exciting. It doesn’t look much like fruit until after about 8 pieces are added.

Another fun and productive class!

Double Reverse Appliqué “in” Ann Arbor

I did a second fun Zoom class with the Ann Arbor gals. This time it was Double Reverse Appliqué.

Double Reverse Applique class sample. Ellen Lindner, AdventureQuilter.com

They made great progress. Just look.
Jennifer chose muted colors and they worked beautifully. (BTW, the focus on Zoom is great. It’s reduced here because the image has been copied and manipulated so many times.)

Colleen finished in just a few hours. Can you tell she’s pleased with her results?A student shows off her work in Ellen Lindner's Double Reverse Applique class (via Zoom.) AdventureQuilter.com

Susan used a fabric which featured a subway map of New York City. So, you can guess the name of her piece: “The Big Apple.” I love it!

Claudia took both classes and had great results both times.

June had taken the class before and had already made an apple. So, she jumped ahead and made a pear.

A student shows off her work in Ellen Lindner's Double Reverse Applique class (via Zoom.) AdventureQuilter.com

Later, she sent me a photo of the finished project. Great, right? Don’t you love the way the value changes make the pear (or apple) look 3D?

June was pretty taken with this technique and designed another pear of her own. She had fun mixing up the colors and I think the results are fantastic.

Susan also sent me photos of her finished projects. Here’s her “Big Apple.”

And her pear. Nice!

All of these ladies did a great job! We had no trouble communicating via Zoom and it was a lot of fun.

If you want to try this technique, you can learn via my eBook, or my on-demand class. (Or, of course, tell your guild program chair to “bring” me to your guild.) There are so many great ways to learn these days!

I hope you’ve had some fun learning opportunities during this pandemic time.

Apples a la Asheville

How ’bout them apples?

These are just a few apple projects from my recent “Double Reverse Applique” class in Asheville, NC. The women were adventurous and flexible. It definitely showed as they created a variety of wonderful pieces.

Here’s Nancy with her apple, also shown above.

Marian put her red in the background.

Liz used more subdued colors.Apples a la Asheville. Student results from Ellen Lindner's Double Reverse Applique class. AdventureQuilter.com/blog

Kay didn’t even get the full supply list before coming to class, so she grabbed a bunch of green fabrics and went for it!

Janet stuck with classic colors.Apples a la Asheville. Student results from Ellen Lindner's Double Reverse Applique class. AdventureQuilter.com/blog

As did Diane. But look how different they are!

Once she got home, Chris redid the bottom portion of her piece, making it lighter. You can see her class version in the first photo.

Aren’t these wonderful? Don’t you love the variety? This class is always popular and well received. And I think these photos show why.

Great job, ladies!
