New York City Inspiration: Through a Tourist’s Eyes

I spent the bulk of this past week in New York City, with my family.  It was fabulous!  (But cold.)  We had lots of fun doing the usual tourist things, and, of course, I took lots of photos of those activities.  But, I also found myself reaching for the camera A LOT, just to record the “everyday” things around me.  (Everyday to New Yorkers, but not to this Floridian who grew up on a farm.)

There were tall pale buildings, bright blue skies, stark tree trunks, magnificent architecture, street vendors, and paths through Central Park.  So many visual delights!

It’s always exhilarating to visit new places and to appreciate the wonderful sites there.  It also reminds to look at my own surroundings with the eyes of a tourist.  What have I been missing here at home?

Where do you find inspiration?  How do you record it?

inspiration is EVERYWHERE of course. One of my favorites is to pull up the macro feature of my camera and just pick one spot outside and look at things REALLY closely.

WOW..I do exactly the same thing! Both in NYC (when I was visiting during the time my daughter was in school there, I took so many pictures of buildings, people, details…), and in my neighborhood AND with my macro-setting on the camera!
Sometimes its just colors of things that are inspirational, sometimes textures, sometimes the overall feeling…Folders and folders of photos waiting patiently on my computer… 🙂
I think I got the part of RECORDING my inspirations fairly well – besides photos I do carry a small sketchbook in my purse (that is something I started since taking Lyric’s class!) and I do write my morning pages that catch a lot of those kind of thoughts… Now I need to master how to balance the time between everyday life and time for MAKING my art, how to just DO IT (in whatever small bits of time I have).
But just having the ability to SEE beauty around me and be inspired by it, is what I am really grateful for! 🙂
